Spreadsheet Design

A spreadsheet is a type of software that has similarities of a paper worksheet. It displays a number of cells that together make up a grid that contain rows and columns. Each cell consist either numeric or alphanumeric text values. A spreadsheet cell may alternatively contain a formula that defines how the contents of that particular cell or a group of cells is to be calculated from the contents of any other cell (or combination of cells) each time any cell is updated. Spreadsheets are frequently used for financial information because of their ability to re-calculate the entire sheet automatically after a change to a single cell is made.
There are two things that make a good spreadsheet, first good design then second, good data. These things sound pretty obvious. However, it’s all too easy to dive into creating a spreadsheet without putting much thought into its design. And a poorly designed spreadsheet is bound to make it harder to enter valid data. Without valid data, your spreadsheet will never yield useful results. Good design doesn’t mean making your spreadsheet look good, although spreadsheet appearance can definitely aid in usability and readability of your work. Good spreadsheet design consists of organizing your data logically and ensuring that all your formulae are correct. Far too many people spend about 30%, or more, of their time formatting their spreadsheets. Often the overuse of formatting adds size to your Workbook and while it may look like a work of art to you, it may look terrible to another.
Spreadsheets are wonderful at eliminating repetitive work. Not only can you automatically copy formulae in this fashion, but you’ll find most spreadsheets also have a feature called ‘auto-series’ which automatically inserts series of numbers, dates, days or months.
